ojug meeting tue nov 17th — grails
OJUG normally moves its November meeting to the 2nd Tuesday to avoid the holidays, but we’re staying with the 3rd Tuesday this year and meeting on 11/17 as it is still a week before Thanksgiving.
Besides the regular time and place, another upshot is that Scott Hickey will be available to talk about Grails.
Meeting details:
- Tuesday, November 17th
- Food/discussion at 5:30pm
- Presentation at 6:00pm
- Gallup Riverfront Campus, 1001 Gallup Dr, Omaha, NE
ojug meeting tue oct 20th — grails and/or netty
The 3rd Tuesday is coming up. Scott Hickey has tentatively agreed to give a talk about Groovy/Grails, with the caveat that he just started a new remote gig as a Grails tech lead and so may have to be out, depending on how his ramp-up time is going.
If Scott can’t make it, I’ve been hacking on a non-blocking HTTP proxy server built on top of JBoss’s Netty asynchronous I/O framework. It’s a pretty small project and I think a good intro to how asynchronous I/O, the current darling of systems that scale to thousands of concurrent connections, works.
Netty has been getting some press as a potential successor to Apache’s Mina asynchronous I/O framework for building low-level custom protocols. E.g. previously I’ve used Mina to talk binary to a card processing system.
Meeting details:
- Tuesday, October 20th
- Food/discussion at 5:30pm
- Presentation at 6:00pm
- Gallup Riverfront Campus, 1001 Gallup Dr, Omaha, NE
- Please RSVP to stephen at exigencecorp.com
Hope to see you there.
May 20th - Next Meeting
We are just a week away from the next OJUG meeting. This month our speaker will be Scott Hickey with a talk entitled:
Groovy is Java
Most presentations about Groovy highlight many of the similarities between Groovy and other dynamic languages such as Ruby and Smalltalk. However, Groovy’s design goal was not to replace Java or be a JVM implementation of an existing language. Its target audience is the Java developer and its goal is to augment the toolbox of Java developer. In this talk, Scott will talk about the various ways that Groovy *is* Java.
